Life in Troft had been much simpler than life in the states. Remy knew how to stay alive there. She knew who she was there. In this strange world, everything she thought she knew was completely proven wrong.
She was the only person who could speak. The only person who appeared willing to try. However, all it got her was anger from her mother. Sure, she hadnât spoken that much in Troft before, but that was because she wasnât surrounded by people. She had an excuse. Here, it seemed like voice meant grounds for death.
If Liliana was this mysterious ruler, there had to be information somewhere about her. Probably in a museum or library.
Remy shook her head. Solving the problems of the world wasnât her job. She only chose to move to America to reunite with her mother. If she couldnât have that, then what was the point of even staying? She wasnât about to risk her own life trying to hunt down a world leader.
Iâm just one girl. I didnât sign up for this, she thought.
People walked by, staring at her, as she headed toward her motherâs home. It was a home, but it wasnât her home, so devoid of emotion and sound. Since she arrived, she didnât see her mother smile once.
I canât be the one responsible for saving the world. Remy thought as she walked straight into her room, watching the shell of her mother waste away on the couch. Maybe I should just go back to Troft. I donât belong here. Iâm sorry, Mom. I canât save you. All I wanted to do was get to know you. I have failed humanity.
She sighed and shook her head. All around her were phones as Remy stared out her window. No one dared to look up as they walked. They walked into walls and didnât seem to care. Instead, they just adjusted their footing and kept moving. They didnât care that they couldnât express how they felt. There were no whispered conversations held by young lovers. There was nothing that made this world worth living in.
Soon after dawn, she packed up her belongings and was ready to go. She walked by her motherâs room, kissed her on the forehead one last time, and walked out the door toward the location where she stored her boat. She felt a wave of disappointment as she climbed in, a feeling of lost hope toward the world. She had expected the world outside of Troft to be different. But this was just too much.

Almost a week had passed since Remy decided to return to her solitary life in Troft. Lucky for her, the fire left her most of her home, enough for her to repair it with a couple twigs and branches.
Itâs better like this anyway. They donât need me. They donât even know me. Their lives wouldnât be any different whether I was there or not. Remy thought to herself as she roasted the head of a hare over a burning flame.
